Great Fun Canoeing in the Wye
Excellent service and a Fantastic Experience!!!
We opted for the 4 day experience starting in Hay on Wye and Finishing in Ross on Wye. We all met up around lunch lunch time on the first day and had a leisurely 8 mile paddle down to Whitney Toll Bridge where we stopped for some refreshments at the Boat Inn and an overnight stay at the Pound bunk House.
The Pound also has a camp site, but we decided to stay in the bunk house which comprises of around 8 beds. Comfortable and clean but don't expect luxury.
Refreshed for the next day (although a bit hung over) we had a big 25 mile paddle to Hereford Rowing Club. We started around 9 and arrived at 5pm. This was through some of the most beautiful countryside we have ever experienced. We saw Salmon, Red Kites, Kingfishers, Buzzards along the way and didn't see another Canoe.
25 miles seems a long way but the river carries you and helps a bit. There is only one stop off en route at a campsite where you can grab a beer and some lunch.
Arriving at Hereford we stayed at the Holly Tree B&B which is about 100yds from the Rowing Club and close to the main Centre. This was very comfortable and clean.
The third day was a paddle from Hereford to Tresseck camp site. We split this into 2 x 8 mile sections as we stopped for lunch at Lucksall Campsite and dropped a couple of the lads off as they couldn't stay until the Monday. The hard core crew carried on arriving at Tresseck where we stayed in another B&B and found the New Harp Inn for dinner and evening refreshments.
The final day was a swift 10 mile paddle to Ross we left about 10am and arrived at 1pm.
Everything was arranged by Hereford Canoe Hire and we'd like to thank Andy, Will and the team for the excellent planning and organisational skills. The guys dropped us off and picked us up and made sure things were good.
This resulted in a memorable trip and a great bonding session.
The 25 mile bit may be a bit of a slog for some, but I'm no expert and no spring chicken but I found it OK (we also had good weather). The guys at Hereford Canoes will be able to advise you for the best route to suit your ability/timescales. Read more
